Hello, thank you for taking a look at my website! Here is a bit about me and my creative world...
I live in Pakipaki {Maori for applause} on a little hill in the New Zealand countryside, with my family and our cat Rosie, who is scared of everything except bulls. For as long as I can remember I have loved drawing and making things. I was lucky to grow up with parents who said I could do whatever I wanted as long as I cleaned up when I was finished.
As you may notice I love to draw whales and fish... I was influenced at an early age by my Dad, who worked at our local Marineland when he first arrived in New Zealand from Canada. He had lots of books and photos and I used to love looking through them with him. Recently I went to Rarotonga with my husband Jono on our honeymoon. The highlight was snorkelling in the amazing coral reef with all the wonderful fish... so so beautiful. Along with our cat Rosie we also have two clown fish Luna and Scout.
I love collecting things, there is something that fills me with joy seeing a whole lot of the same or similar things together... supermarket shelves please me, rows of the same thing for some reason sits easy in my brain. So creating patterns and fabric collections was a natural progression for me... the frantic sense of excited chaos getting elements to fit and then the overwhelming sense of harmony when they do and the fact that I can create a structured repeating rhythm that could go on forever... feels a little bit like magic.
I think of a fabric collection as a bit like creating a world or a story... I had an imaginary friend when I was younger... 'January' who my Mother said disappeared when my brother {who was two years younger than me} got a bit more interesting and interactive... Creating worlds has always been something that is very important to me and in my patterns I like to think each element has its own sense of belonging to the world and whatever/whoever sits next to them within the pattern... I think for me colour also plays a big part in that sense of belonging.
Thank you for reading and if you would like to license any of my work please email me or my lovely agent Jehane who would be more than happy to help you with your next project...
